Floods and a landslide have hit industrial areas in Indonesia, causing widespread devastation.

Footage shows workers wading through floodwaters inside a building in Morowali Regency on March 17.

Officials said flash floods struck Central Sulawesi on Sunday evening following heavy rain and strong winds. Two villages in Bahodopi District, Lalampu and Labota, were reportedly submerged.

Central Sulawesi DPRD member Muhammad Safri attributed the disaster to poor mining management, saying environmental factors were ignored.

He said: 'This incident is clear evidence of poor mining governance that only focuses on the exploitation of natural resources. They no longer pay attention to aspects of human safety and the surrounding environment.'

Safri called on the governor to conduct a comprehensive review of mining activities in the region.

In Madiun Regency, East Java, flooding and a landslide on March 15 affected around 2,000 residents and submerged 500 homes.

One person was reported missing after being swept away in a river.

BPBD Madiun Regency head Boby Saktia Putra Lubis said the disaster impacted five subdistricts, with landslides occurring in two.

Residents have been urged to remain alert as severe weather is expected to persist.

Landslides are common in the country, particularly during the rainy season. The risk is further exacerbated by deforestation and illegal mining activities in remote areas.
