Indonesia landslide buries homes leaving two feared dead
A massive landslide buried homes in Indonesia this morning, leaving two people feared dead.
The disaster, triggered by moderate to heavy rain, struck four houses in Banturejo Hamlet, Sambirejo Village, Wonosalam District, Jombang Regency, East Java Province, on January 23.
Dramatic footage shows the aftermath, with residents clearing debris and searching for any valuables trapped beneath. Officials also retrieved a motorbike.
Wiku Birawa, Chief Executive of the Jombang Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency, confirmed that father and son, Ismail, 56, and Nadin, 9, remained buried under the landslide.
Birawa said: 'When the landslide occurred, both of them were still sleeping. We are moving heavy equipment to shift the material and search for the victims.'
The four affected houses included one empty home, one where the occupants managed to escape, and two inhabited.
Wonosalam Subdistrict Head Haris Aminnudi added: 'Three survivors were successfully rescued and treated at the Wonosalam Health Center.'
The landslide occurred in a local plantation, where the steep terrain is believed to have contributed to the disaster.
In a separate incident, a married couple, aged 77 and 70, were buried under a rockslide in Lembang Sarambu, Buntu Pepasan District, North Toraja Regency, earlier today. The landslide also disrupted the road linking Lembang Sarambu to Sapan Subdistrict, with the Pepasan dead end completely blocked, making it impassable to vehicles.
Indonesia and some neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia have been experiencing monsoon season, which brings soaring temperatures followed by powerful afternoon rainstorms, leading to widespread flash floods.
Landslides are common in the country, particularly during the rainy season. The risk is further exacerbated by deforestation and illegal mining activities in remote areas.
