A videographer on a safari in the Maasai Mara captured epic footage of an intense showdown between two huge hippos.

The filmer told Newsflare: "We were driving in the Maasai Mara on a game drive photographing some lions and in the distance, we saw two animals fighting. From far, we couldn't see what it was but when we looked through the binoculars, we realised it was two hippos fighting.

"We quickly drove closer to them and for the next hour, we watched these two huge male hippos fight and lock jaws for up to a few minutes at a time.

"There was lots of blood flowing and the noise the tusks made when they locked was crazy. Male hippos can often fight till death mainly for mating rights and territory.

"When we left this sighting, the hippos were still fighting but the one on the right looked like he had lost a lot of blood. He would have most likely died as a result from the fight."
