Epic moment lion fights 30 hyenas
This is the epic moment a lone lion fought off 30 hyenas right next to a safari tour.
Robert Sobrepena was on a drive through the Masai Mara, Kenya, on June 14, when his tour was treated to a battle of mammoth proportions.
Dramatic footage captured a confident male charge between two jeeps before pouncing on a single hyena.
As the lion continued its attack, the rest of the pack snapped aggressively at its tail to try and deter the relentless attack, before the king of the jungle lifted the limp carcass like a trophy.
Robert, from San Francisco, California, US, said: “I couldn't believe we were lucky enough to witness such a fierce battle on our first safari in Kenya. I was amazed and in awe. Our guide Solomon also told me that in his 31 years of doing safaris, he had never seen anything like this".
Robert said that the actual fight lasted around nine minutes.
"There was the first battle where the lion seriously injured one of the hyenas after which, the pack surrounded him and started barking and threatening him. It was apparently an attempt by the other hyenas to save the injured one who could no longer defend itself".
Robert explained that after a few more battles and encounters with the pack, the lion proceeded to move toward the injured hyena to go in for the kill.
“The lion vigorously defended itself and injured one or two more of the attacking hyenas. Eventually, the lion picked up the dead hyena and then lifted it to show the whole pack its carcass, as if it was holding a trophy for all to see. The lion had wounds on his face and body. He actually sat there and liked his wounds for a while after the fight".
