A British hiker and five other tourists were rescued after disappearing in a remote jungle in the Philippines.

Alexander Radbanyi, 63, seen in the video in a blue and pink jacket, set off with five holidaymakers to see the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes nestled in a dense forest on the island of Negros, on March 19 morning.

They were traversing a rugged trail on Mount Talinis, the second-highest peak on the island, but found themselves lost in the woods without a local tour guide.

Authorities launched a search after the hikers were reported missing by locals on March 20. The five other missing backpackers were identified by authorities as German nationals Wolfgang, 67, Aldwin Fink, 60, and Torsten Martin Groschupp, 58, Canadian man Terry, and Russian tourist Anton Chernov, 38.

Disaster response officials, volunteers, and soldiers were sent on a frantic mission to scour the woodlands.

Local mayor Edgar Teves Jr. said all tourists were rescued alive from the mountain by Saturday evening, March 22.

He said: 'A night search and rescue operation was conducted in the mountains of Valencia and Amlan, with teams divided into two groups, the search and rescue team Malabo was tasked to cross and search the area traversing the direction to the hydroelectric power plant in Amlan traversing the trail going to Malabo, Valencia.'

Alexander and Torsten were the first in the group to be rescued. They were found by villagers wandering the trail in a dishevelled state on March 21. Footage shows the pair being assisted down the mountain, where they received first aid from medics.

Soldiers found the rest of the missing tourists at a hydropower plant near their destination, the twin crater lakes, at around 9:44 am on March 22.

Local health officer Dr Sheryl said: 'They are not dehydrated, they said they were able to drink water from the lake. One of them had packed snacks.'

Villagers said they reported the backpackers missing when they failed to return to their rental house on Wednesday evening. Three of the tourists were reported to have families living in the nearby town of Valencia.

Police said the hikers had likely lost their way after heavy rain fell while they were descending the mountain.

Police spokesman Henry Japay said: 'It was rainy at the time and that led to zero visibility. There's a big possibility that they stopped and took shelter when it started raining.'
