Suspected draft dodger dragged into van to fight war in Ukraine
This is the dramatic moment a suspected draft dodger was forcibly taken by Ukraine's conscription squad, to be sent to fight in the ongoing war against Russia.
Footage shows military recruiters tackling a man attempting to evade the soldiers in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, Odesa, on March 22.
A burly officer is seen slamming him to the ground before pinning him down, placing a hand over his mouth and nose in an apparent attempt to subdue him.
The man, visibly struggling, is later seen dazed and unsteady on his feet as an angry crowd surrounds the officers and a police official.
Local reports said that the recruit was eventually bundled into a van and transported to a military enlistment office for induction.
The Odesa Regional Territorial Centre for Recruitment defended the operation, saying: 'During the establishment of his identity, it was found that the citizen was wanted for evading military duty. Instead of cooperating, he attempted to escape twice, leading to an incident recorded on law enforcement body cameras.'
Ukraine's military recruitment methods have come under increasing scrutiny, with allegations of so-called 'snatch squads' forcibly detaining draft dodgers. Russian media claims that in just two months, 40 legal appeals against enforced recruitment have been filed in a single city.
During a tense Oval Office meeting on February 28, US Vice President JD Vance confronted 'corrupt' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy over the country's conscription tactics.
Vance accused Ukraine of forcing unwilling conscripts to the front lines due to manpower shortages.
He said: 'You guys are going around and forcing conscripts to the front lines because you have manpower problems.'
Questions have also been raised over missing funds that have been sent to Ukraine.
Ukraine's military draft policies have faced scrutiny for their harsh enforcement tactics and alleged human rights abuses.
However, many Ukrainians have fled their homeland to avoid conscription. Some have moved to neighbouring safe havens such as Georgia, where they can run businesses or find local employment.
Others have moved further afield to warmer climbs, often causing conflict with locals.
