A home shook as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit Vietnam in the early hours of Monday morning.

CCTV footage shows the tremor rattling the house in Kon Tum City in Quang Ngai on October 6.

The United States Geological Survey said the quake struck 53 kilometres (33 miles) north of Kon Tum at 1:28 am local time at a depth of 10 kilometres (six miles).

Local media, citing Vietnam's Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Centre, said 25 consecutive earthquakes were detected in the mountainous Quang Ngai region within 20 hours.

The centre had logged the quake as a magnitude 5 tremor. It reportedly caused cracks in schools and dormitories in the Mang But commune.

Centre director Nguyen Xuan Anh said: 'According to preliminary studies, the earthquake forecast in Kon Tum (old) will continue in the near future but is unlikely to be greater than 5.5 degrees.

'However, it is still necessary to immediately implement more detailed studies to assess earthquake activity in this area.'

Vietnam lies near the edge of the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcanic eruptions and earthquakes happen.
