This is the dramatic moment hundreds of residents were stranded on a flooded road in the Philippines.

Footage shows a sea of locals wading through murky water following intense downpours that battered the area in Maasim, Sarangani province, on Monday.

Reports said heavy rain in the region triggered flash floods at around 3 pm local time, forcing the closure of a portion of the national highway.

Arlene Hollero, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (MDRRM) officer, said the route was reopened by 9 pm.

Authorities reported that at least 100 families from four villages were affected by the freak weather. Around 20 homes were damaged and submerged by the floods. Four individuals were reported injured.

State weather bureau PAGASA said the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is currently affecting the country, bringing rain to various parts of Mindanao.

The region's low-lying geography, inadequate drainage systems, and rapid urbanisation make it especially vulnerable to flooding.

Limited infrastructure often struggles to handle the heavy rainfall, resulting in widespread flash floods.
