Elephant holds up traffic and rummages through pickup truck for food
An elephant held up traffic and rummaged through a pickup truck for food.
Driver Promsing Singhaseni encountered the hungry jumbo on the road in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Thailand.
Footage shows the animal ambling toward the vehicle. It then inspected the back of the truck, searching for snacks, and eventually took a yellow bag with food inside.
Promsing Singhaseni said: 'It was my first experience of encountering a floating checkpoint. I felt scared.
'I had to pay tolls in the form of gas, milk, condensed milk, lighters, jam, and ivory stabbed at the back door.'
Thailand has up to 3,500 elephants in the wild. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in the country at the beginning of the 20th century.
The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
