Six people were injured when an out-of-control truck ploughed into seven vehicles at an intersection in Thailand.

CCTV footage shows the 22-wheeler skidding onto a busy highway in Buriram province, on March 31. It drove over the median divider before smashing into cars that were waiting at a traffic light.

Police and emergency responders arrived after receiving a report at 8:20 am. They found the overturned truck with its cargo of rocks and debris scattered across the road.

The truck driver, Wichian Luenfa, 26, suffered minor injuries to his right arm and declined medical treatment.

He said: 'I was delivering rocks to the Lam Plai Mat District. While going downhill near at the intersection, the brakes burned out and failed so I lost control.

'I tried to steer out of the way, but the truck rolled onto the highway and struck cars stopped at the red traffic light.

'If I hadn't turned, I would've hit the oncoming cars instead, which would have been a more serious accident.'

Six injured people were rescued from mangled cars, including one individual who suffered serious wounds. They were taken to the Buriram Hospital for treatment.

Police Captain Porachat Raksawong of the Mueang Buriram Police Station said: 'We will check security cameras and witnesses at the scene again. We will also summon Wichian for further interrogation to proceed with legal action.'

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
