A massive fire ripped through 500 homes in a slum area in Manila.

Drone footage shows the bright orange inferno engulfing homes made of flammable materials in the overcrowded Tondo district, at around 3:30 am local time today.

Fire Service Superintendent Bonifacio Carta said 100 fire trucks were deployed to extinguish the flames, which tore through 500 houses in the area.

He said: 'The fire broke out in a two-storey residential building. We believe it was sparked by an unattended candle or an electric fault.'

Authorities said the fire was extinguished at 6:59 am. It caused an estimated 10 million PHP (130,000 GBP) in damages.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Manila's Tondo district is among the most densely populated urban areas of the world, marked by poverty, informal settlements, and high crime rates. The overcrowded squatter settlements are filled with hovels made of wood and corrugated metal, exacerbating fire risks.
