Two juvenile gray seals got a second chance at life in the wild thanks to a successful collaboration between Assateague State Park and the National Aquarium. The seals, who were found stranded near Lewes, Delaware, were carefully rehabilitated by aquarium staff before being released back into the ocean during a special event on the shores of Assateague.

Winter is seal season along Maryland’s coast, and it’s not unusual to see these marine mammals resting on Assateague’s beaches. While these sightings can be exciting, officials remind the public to keep a safe distance—at least 150 feet—and to report any seals that appear stranded or injured.

If you come across a seal in need, contact the Stranding Network Hotline at 410-546-3880. With community awareness and conservation efforts like this, organizations continue to protect and care for vulnerable wildlife along the East Coast.
