The Portland, Indiana Fire Department made a splash—literally—by taking part in the USC Speak Your Mind Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention. Nominated by Assistant Chief Dustine Hilfiker’s daughter, Charlotte, the team used a firetruck hose to create a massive shower, soaking the crew in support of Active Minds, a nonprofit promoting mental wellness among young adults.

The Ice Bucket Challenge, launched by USC’s MIND club, encourages participants to “get soaked, speak up, and support mental health.” Portland firefighters embraced the spirit of the campaign with smiles, teamwork, and a powerful message: it’s okay to talk about mental health, and no one is alone.

In true challenge fashion, the Portland Fire Department passed the torch by nominating the Portland Police Department, Jay County EMS, and Barnetts Wrecker Service. Their hope? That more groups join in the movement, raising awareness, support, and conversations that can save lives.
