A severe oil leak off the Louisiana coast was contained after eight days following a blowout at an offshore well.

The incident was first reported on Saturday, April 26, and involved a 30 to 40ft geyser of oil contaminating sensitive Gulf Coast habitats.

Aerial footage shows the extent of the spill near Garden Island Bay, revealing the environmental impact on the surrounding area.

Cleanup operations are ongoing under a Unified Command, including the U.S. Coast Guard and other state and federal agencies.

Authorities identified the source as Well #59. Although the well was not abandoned, it had been inactive since 2016.

The Coast Guard reported recovering approximately 70,000 gallons of an oily mixture. However, estimates suggest the total discharge could exceed 100,000 gallons.

One oiled bird has been sighted, and pollutants have reportedly entered a protected area for endangered sea turtles.

Response efforts were delayed due to the well's remote location, with capping equipment taking nearly a week to arrive. The well was successfully sealed on May 4.

The cause of the blowout remains under investigation.
