Thai woman, 70, arrested for brother’s murder over inheritance row after 13 years of escape from arrest warrant
A Thai pensioner was arrested for allegedly murdering her own brother over an inheritance row 13 years ago.
Thawai Sa-ard-iam, 70, reportedly slashed her sibling's throat when he barged into her husband's home in a drunken rampage in Kamphaeng Phet in central Thailand.
She claimed he tried to strangle her, prompting her to grab the knife tucked in his waistband. She allegedly swiped the weapon across his neck, causing him to bleed to his death.
The couple fled their residence before their shocked neighbours discovered the corpse.
Thawai had evaded her arrest warrant for more than a decade before being caught at a housing estate in Rayong, some 300 miles south of her hometown, on April 28.
Footage shows police storming into the property and arresting the shocked woman, who was then informed of the charges against her.
Police Colonel Siwawong Damrongsajsiri, superintendent of the Special Service Division 3, said: 'We received a tip-off that the suspect was hiding in Rayong province, so we sent a team to arrest her. She claimed she killed her brother in self-defence.'
Thawai allegedly confessed to the murder and admitted she had been locked in a bitter property dispute with her brother since 2012.
She said: 'My husband and I were eating dinner on the second floor when my brother barged into our home. I was scared because he was clearly drunk and carrying a knife.
'We ran into our bedroom and locked the door as we waited for him to leave, but he forced his way inside. He wrapped his hands around my neck, so I grabbed his knife and slashed him in self-defence. I did what I had to to survive.'
Police said Thawai was detained at the Kamphaeng Phet Provincial Court for further legal action.
