Two pilots went missing after a plane crashed into a lake in Japan yesterday.

The Japan Air Self-Defence Force (JASDF) Kawasaki T-4 reportedly went down in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture, on Wednesday, May 14, around 3:08 pm.

Fire departments received emergency calls from locals reporting that what appeared to be an aircraft had slammed near the water.

Upon arrival at the scene, parts of the aircraft were discovered in and around the pond.

An incident report from the Aviation Safety Network stated: 'A T-4 trainer aircraft from Nyutabaru Air Base, which was on an escort mission related to the regular maintenance of an F-15 fighter jet, crashed into Lake Iruka while returning the F-15 pilot to Nyutabaru Air Base.

'The crash occurred just two minutes after takeoff.

'The 29-year-old First Lieutenant in the front seat and the 31-year-old Captain in the rear seat are missing, and search operations are being conducted by an Air Self-Defence Force U-125A, a UH-60J, and a team of 36 personnel.'

There were no reported injuries in the vicinity.

Local media noted that an oil slick was observed on the northern side of the pond.

An investigation is underway and the search for the crew members is ongoing.
