This is the terrifying moment the land crumbled down while workers searched for gems in a dangerous jade mine in Myanmar.

Footage shows soil and rocks tumbling down the sides of the pit in the Hpakant township as onlookers scrambled to safety on June 15.

The gemstone-rich mine, along with several others, is found in Kachin State in northern Myanmar. The area is known for both its high-quality jadeite and perilous terrain.

Hpakant has been the site of several mining disasters in which hundreds have died or gone missing.

In 2015, a tragic landslide near a jade mine killed at least 116 people and left 100 more missing. A separate landslide in 2018 buried 18 and injured 45. Finally, more than 160 jade miners died in July 2020 after heavy rains triggered the collapse of heaps of mining waste.

Despite the risks of the job, however, the miners said they had to keep working to earn money for their families.
