Israel: Israeli protesters demand end to Gaza war, call for peace amid backlash
SHOTLIST JERUSALEM (MAY 29, 2025) (ANADOLU-ACCESS ALL) 1. (SOUNDBITE) (English) YAEL BURGAN SAYING: “I'm looking at it with a lot of sadness and with grief that a lot of my people and a lot and my government is choosing the way of blood and more blood and hate and more hate and war and more war and more dead people and this is why I feel specifically in these days it is our commitment and our duty to bring up a voice of peace and it's very hard people really shout bad things at us and curse us and say ugly things to us. Some young girl just told me I am ashamed for my country and so we are used to get a lot of hate from our people because we choose peace and because we think that the other is a human being as well. We view all human beings as created in the image of God and we feel that in times where so many people lose their lives for this revenge notion and for the wish of revenge for so many people in these times it's even more important and crucial for us to remind everyone that every human being every soul is precious and that we should do everything we can to stop this and to save as many lives as we can. The fact that we're not able to stop it doesn't mean that we agree with it. The fact that we are forced to support this government or to support this acts of this government doesn't mean we agree. We do not agree. We try everything we can. We yell, we shout, we go to the border, we get arrested, we get beaten up, we get hated and we get stones thrown at us. We do whatever we can and we're still not able to stop it but I want all the world to know that there are Israelis who feel bad with it, who don't want this to happen, who don't want kids to die in Gaza, who don't want people to starve, don't want their houses to be ruined. We don't want that. We don't. It's just that our government doesn't listen to us.” 2. (SOUNDBITE) (English) DOLEV ASSAF SAYING: “I don't know if I can see this changing. Hope is a tough thing to see now. I'm sure for many people, definitely for the people of Gaza, that I would like to offer my solidarity to the people of Gaza suffering from hunger, from this constant horrible bombings and may this end soon. That's all I can hope for. Now in this stage, the war in Gaza has also caused a man-made hunger inside Gaza. And Israel is announcing a distribution plan. But UN and other human rights organizations are opposing it, saying it's not based on humanitarian principles. Food is a humanitarian necessary every person on earth deserves. There's enough food for everyone. And I wish it wasn't in the hand of such horrible, trashest government that's determining the state of so many people. Unfortunately, the Israeli media does not show the footage that you see, I'm sure, in Turkey and all over the world. Israel media doesn't show and doesn't let you hear the voices from Gaza. And only, you know, I see it because I'm looking actively at myself. But I know that people here are not exposed to this footage. And I'm sure that if they were exposed, they could not support that. I know that. I'm heartbroken. I'm heartbroken. And to know that this is done by my name is, you know, it's heartbreaking. I wish, I wish the best for the people in Gaza and I wish for the suffering to end soon. You know, two days ago, we saw what's called the Jerusalem Day, where fascists are marching these streets, filling it with hate and true supremacy and racism. And we are here today, we're not many people, but there are still people here with their heart in the right place. I meet them every day and one day peace will come. We know that there's no other solution. Peace will prevail. Amen.” 3. (SOUNDBITE) (English) AVI DABUSH SAYING: “We are here to say it very clearly and loudly is to stop the war right now for all the behalf of all people in this region and then starting diplomatic solution, talking and having a healing process. Of course in a human rights perspective we are against it, we are against the war generally but of course against hunger to make people go without any food and in shelter of course killing people and so on. So again we must end the war because of that and I must say this call is getting sped off in Israel. They pass and it getting more and more loud and we are obligated to that as Jews, as human rights activists, as humanists, humankind so we are obligated to that. Of course in Israel we can't really see this media in the channels, in Israeli channels, but people all over the world seeing that and people also in Israel. The one that wants to see, he can see and we are obligated again as religious people to see that there is a saying that you must see what's in the dark. You know the people that are in the light can't see what's in the dark so you must be very obligated to that to see what's in the dark and we see what's in the dark and again I used to live on the Gaza border for many years so we know the reality there we have still friends and connections there and we are obligated also to their lives and not only of course to the life of our families but again we are aware to the terrible reality and we have this commitment in ourselves for human rights and to stop the war." 4. REPORTER ASKING: “Any other messages you want to say, you want to stand from here?” 5. (SOUNDBITE) (English) AVI DABUSH SAYING: “Just be brave, be courageous. I must say that I can't see that you either pro Israel or pro-Palestine you have to be pro-life and pro-humans either the Palestinians or Israelis and this voice must be heard very loudly. Thank you.” JERUSALEM - MAY 29: Israelis marched in Jerusalem on Thursday, May 29, to demand an end to their country’s military offensive in Gaza. Demonstrators say they will continue protesting despite facing societal pressure, as they decry the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the Palestinian enclave. Activists from Rabbis for Human Rights, including Yael Burgan, Dolev Assaf, and Avi Dabush, spoke to an Anadolu after participating in the demonstration, expressing grief over the ongoing violence and calling for an immediate ceasefire. Yael Burgan described the emotional toll of opposing Israel’s military actions, saying: "I'm looking at it with a lot of sadness and with grief that a lot of my people and a lot and my government is choosing the way of blood and more blood and hate and more hate and war and more war and more dead people… it is our commitment and our duty to bring up a voice of peace." She said they are cursed at, insulted, and even physically attacked, stating that some tell them they should be ashamed. “We are used to get a lot of hate from our people because we choose peace and because we think that the other is a human being as well.” Burgan emphasized that many Israelis oppose the sufferings in Gaza, stating: "I want all the world to know that there are Israelis who feel bad with it, who don't want this to happen, who don't want kids to die in Gaza, who don't want people to starve, don't want their houses to be ruined….It's just that our government doesn't listen to us.” Dolev Assaf expressed despair over the situation but maintained solidarity with Palestinians: "I don't know if I can see this changing. Hope is a tough thing to see now. I'm sure for many people, definitely for the people of Gaza, that I would like to offer my solidarity to the people of Gaza suffering from hunger, from this constant horrible bombings and may this end soon." Assaf said Israeli media hides the truth, adding that if people saw what the world sees, they couldn’t support this. “I'm heartbroken. And to know that this is done by my name,” he added. Assaf also condemned the recent Jerusalem Day march, where far-right groups celebrated Israel’s occupation of East Jerusalem, calling it a display of "supremacy and racism." Avi Dabush stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire and political solutions, saying “We are here to say it very clearly and loudly is to stop the war right now for all the behalf of all people in this region and then starting diplomatic solution, talking and having a healing process.” He said the human rights activists oppose starvation, bombings, and killings, stating that this call is growing louder in Israel. Dabush, who lived near Gaza for years, added: "I can't see that you either pro Israel or pro-Palestine you have to be pro-life and pro-humans either the Palestinians or Israelis and this voice must be heard very loudly.” Israel has pursued a devastating offensive in Gaza since October 2023, killing over 54,200 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Aid agencies have warned about the risk of famine among the enclave's more than 2 million population. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war crimes against civilians in the enclave. Writing by Sibel Uygun
