Tourists were seen riding an overloaded tuk-tuk with some perched dangerously on its roof while moving along a road.

Footage shows the reckless holidaymakers crammed around the vehicle in Chiang Mai, Thailand on May 31 evening.

Three lads were sitting on top while another clung to the back passenger door.

Inside, the four-wheeler was already packed with four of their friends, leaving no room for the rest of the group and forcing them to ride on the exterior.

Local Chinnarach Wong Aui, who was driving behind them, said: ‘It happened at 11 pm on the road in front of Chiang Mai Municipality Stadium. They headed towards Maninoprat Road to Si Phum Intersection.

'What they did was dangerous. I hope they would learn how to be mindful of their safety and others while using our roads.'

The men could be seen taking photos of the surroundings during their journey, seemingly ignoring safety hazards.

Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
