Female doctor arrested over 'date rape drugs sold through clinics in Bangkok'
A female police doctor was arrested for allegedly selling date rape drugs through clinics in Bangkok.
Police Colonel Dr Anchulee Phetrat had reportedly been stockpiling alprazolam at a cost price of 15 million baht (341,000 GBP) from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 2022.
She was said to have ordered the controlled substance, known to be used as a date rape drug, using the names of 11 clinics in the city before selling them to youths for illicit purposes.
The police colonel, who works at the Police General Hospital, allegedly banked a staggering 80 million baht (1.8 million GBP) from the heavily marked up sales before being caught on June 10.
Authorities raided Anchulee's residence after the FDA flagged the anomalous transactions. They also seized hundreds of boxes of alprazolam in her police flat, where a suspected accomplice was found living in the government accommodation.
Police General Suchart Teerasawat, vice-chairman of the Ministry of Public Health's drug suppression task force, said: 'The arrested female doctor faces both disciplinary and criminal charges for allowing outsiders to stay in government housing and for the illegal possession and distribution of controlled substances.
'She will also face money laundering charges and authorities will seize assets related to the crimes.'
The officer added that the Medical Council will be asked to revoke Anchulee's license.
Police said they will be raiding the remaining clinics to see if other medical staff were involved in the operation.
Officials said alprazolam, better known as Xanax, is classified as a category 2 and 4 controlled substance that only licensed medical professionals are allowed to prescribe.
The drug is used for anxiety treatment, though it is often abused for recreational purposes in Thailand, where it can be used to spike women's drinks as a date rape drug.
