OAKLAND, Calif. — A California Highway Patrol officer helped rescue an injured pelican from the middle of northbound I-880 near 66th Avenue on June 16, according to CHP Oakland.

The large bird was spotted on the roadway, prompting a call from a concerned member of the public. An officer quickly responded, safely securing the pelican and transporting it to International Bird Rescue, a nonprofit that specializes in rehabilitating injured waterbirds.

It is unclear how the bird was injured, but CHP praised both the public and International Bird Rescue for their roles in the safe recovery and care of the animal.
