Soldiers uncovered an illegal mining operation near the Zamora River in Ecuador.

Troops carried out surveillance tasks in the region to curb unauthorised mineral extraction and prevent environmental contamination, particularly affecting the river's ecosystem.

During the raid in Zamora Chinchipe, military personnel confiscated five backhoes, 500 gallons of diesel, five non-functional suction motors, and Z-type sorters.

The force said: 'Twelve people were arrested and, along with the evidence, handed over to the relevant authorities.

'The Ecuadorian Army reaffirms its commitment to defending its territory, protecting the environment, and combating illegal activities that threaten the country's natural resources.'

Zamora Chinchipe, located in southeastern Ecuador, has long been a hub of mining activity. One of its areas, Nambija Bajo, gained prominence during the 1980s gold rush, earning it the nickname Puerto Minero (Mining Port). Its rich alluvial deposits have continued to attract both legal and illegal mining operations.
