Thousands stranded at Doha airport following Iran’s attack on US airbase in Qatar
Thousands of passengers were left stranded at Hamad International Airport in Doha after an Iranian missile strike targeted a US airbase in Qatar.
Footage captured by traveller Ray Palthirawat shows terminals packed with passengers as authorities rushed to secure the area and assess the unfolding situation.
Ray said: 'Twenty-one hours flying from Doha to Paris. I left Thailand at 8 pm and checked in on June 23 at 6 pm. After flying about 3-4 hours, the captain announced an emergency landing because Qatar had closed its airspace. So, we had to stop and wait in Mumbai, India, before continuing the flight.
He said they stayed on the ground for around six hours before flying again to Doha.
Ray continued: 'When we landed, there was an extremely long queue with thousands of people waiting. Originally, I was supposed to arrive in Paris on the morning of June 24, but I was rebooked for the morning of June 25.
'The QR041 flight was delayed until 4:20 am, so I will likely arrive close to 11 am. From check-in to arriving in Paris, the whole trip took almost 2 days.'
Despite the disruption, he noted that passengers were provided with hotel accommodations, lunch, and dinner, and described the service as 'decent enough'.
FlightRadar24 reported that approximately 250 flights were cancelled at Hamad International Airport in the wake of the airstrikes.
The incident comes as tensions continue to rise following Israeli airstrikes on Iranian targets on Friday, June 13. The Israeli military said that Iran had launched a counterattack involving more than 100 drones.
The United States entered the conflict between the two countries with American warplanes and submarines targeting at least three facilities in Iran early Sunday.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has vowed to retaliate for the US strikes.
Although President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, deadly attacks continued in both countries.
In the 10 days since the conflict began, Israeli airstrikes have resulted in at least 400 deaths and 3,000 injuries inside Iran, based on figures released by Iran's health ministry. Iran's retaliatory attacks have left at least 24 dead in Israel.
