UK: New Lion Roars Into Woburn Safari Park After Major Transfer From Germany
United Kingdom - July 02, 2025 Bedfordshire, England – A powerful roar echoed through Woburn Safari Park on July 2nd as Lonka, a 10-year-old male African lion, arrived from Serengeti Park in Germany. His journey marks a major milestone, as international animal transfers had been on hold following the global pandemic. Lonka’s arrival comes after months of careful planning by the park’s dedicated team. Now settling into the Kingdom of the Carnivores, Lonka has been exploring his new environment, scent-marking his territory and letting out deep, resonating roars. His striking dark mane and dominant presence have already impressed keepers and visitors alike. “Male lions play a vital role as the heart of the pride, and we’re delighted to welcome Lonka to Woburn,” said Ben Davies, Head of Carnivores. “He’s a confident and impressive individual, and we’re hopeful he’ll soon take his place as king of the pride here at Woburn Safari Park.” Plans are underway to introduce Lonka to 10-year-old lioness Zuri, a seasoned mother known for her excellent maternal instincts. With African lions classified as ‘Vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red List, the possibility of a future breeding partnership could prove significant for conservation efforts. Lonka’s arrival is more than a spectacle—it’s a symbol of Woburn Safari Park’s commitment to preserving one of Africa’s most iconic species. Visitors this summer can expect to see the new lion king adjusting to life in his Bedfordshire domain.
