Myanmar state attacks homes with chemical weapons, claim resistance forces
Burmese soldiers allegedly attacked homes with chemical weapons while trying to retake a key town.
Footage shows men in camouflage engaged in gunfighting as crackling shots and explosions were heard in Kayah State on June 22.
Seven Karen soldiers allegedly felt dizzy because of the chemical weapons launched during the clash around the Phasong Camp.
Resistance forces said the junta mobilised more than 500 troops to reclaim Loikaw town, the capital of Kayah State, on June 22.
The Karenni Nationalities Defence Force, Karenni Army, and People's Defence Force said they have retreated from Loikaw fearing the junta's attack would cause civilian casualties.
They said that they would block supply routes at Demoso Township and Mobye village instead of fighting head-on.
The guerrilla fighters were planning a counterattack by using drones and regrouping with ethnic allies.
The Karenni Nationalities Defence Force claimed to have control over Loikaw.
However, a military offensive launched in March is threatening to wrest their control over the town.
Myanmar has fallen into civil war following the removal of democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, with a military coup in 2021.
Soldiers responded with barbaric force on protesting civilians leading to widespread condemnation and financial sanctions. Rebel groups and civilian militias around the country have since been locked in a series of ongoing clashes with the ruling military.
Aung San Suu Kyi has since been jailed for 33 years on politically motivated charges and is likely to die behind bars unless the army is toppled - a tragic end the politician hailed by Barack Obama as an 'inspirational icon of democracy'.
