Recently, at the entrance of Lingnan Business and Technology First Technical College in Guangdong, 11 round stone bollards were placed in a row along the ground. Steel guardrails were added on both sides, creating what many described as a “multi-layered defence” setup.

Some questioned the necessity of the added guardrails, arguing that the bollards were already heavy enough and that the extra measures seemed redundant — calling it “unnecessary over engineering.”

Others raised concerns about potential waste of public funds, saying the added barriers may lack practical value.

In response, the school explained that while the bollards appear heavy, they are not as structurally solid as they seem. Given that the school’s entrance is located near a major traffic route often used by large trucks, the guardrails were installed for student safety — to prevent vehicles from crashing through.

In case of an accident, the bollards and guardrails can work together to absorb impact and reduce the risk of injury to students. The measure was proposed by the security department and approved by the school’s party committee before implementation.
