Italy - July 19, 2025 On July 19, members of the environmental group Extinction Rebellion plunged into the Buranelli Canal during a climate protest in Treviso. The protesters, dressed as scientists and politicians, held a banner that said: Water up to our necks while the concrete pours. They gathered to denounce what they called the city’s failure to act in response to worsening eco-climatic conditions. The demonstration took place in the late afternoon. One protester, Ludovico, said the recent weeks brought abnormal heat followed by destructive rain, rising sea levels, and flooding in nearby areas. He pointed to the decision to raise the investment for a three-kilometer road project from 60 to 70 million euros as evidence of poor priorities. They criticized the regional and local governments for focusing on cement and construction instead of addressing the environmental crisis. They also recalled a protest in Venice’s Piazza San Marco, which highlighted what they described as contradictions in the government’s decisions. Another protester said they were tired of being ignored by those in power and afraid of losing what matters most.
