Activists arrested while targeting government building in Rome
Activists were arrested while staging a protest outside a government building in Rome.
The BRUCIAMO TUTTO 'We Burn Everything' movement carried out the demonstration on June 13.
Local media reported that three demonstrators arrived in the morning outside the Department for Regional Affairs and Autonomies of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.
They were quickly identified by police patrolling the area, prompting cops to confiscate their flyers and banners, which had been placed on the ground.
The materials read: 'A Basic Income to Escape' and '220 More Anti-Violence Centres for a Fair Freedom Income.'
Footage shows one protester attempting to staple a leaflet to the entrance wall, followed by an attempt to hang a large banner illustrating the national distribution of anti-violence centres.
Police intervened, managing to tear the banner from their hands before it was fully displayed.
While one activist gave a statement, another attempted to open the banner again but was immediately stopped.
Officers then restrained the protesters and took them to the station, where they were formally reported.
Activist Chloe said the demonstration aimed to draw attention to Italy's failure to meet the standards of the Istanbul Convention regarding anti-violence support infrastructure.
She said: 'Urgent action is needed. Anti-violence centres are essential and must be guaranteed to protect lives.'
To access the Freedom Income, individuals must first be certified by a local anti-violence centre. However, most regions lack enough facilities.
Only 25 provinces meet the minimum standard of one centre per 50,000 women, leaving more than 60 per cent of provinces below the requirement. Over 220 new centres are needed to ensure fair access to the benefit.
