Representatives from multiple countries to the United Nations on Sunday warned against the Israeli government's plan to completely take over Gaza City, condemning the impending operation at an emergency meeting held by the Security Council. The emergency meeting was requested by permanent and non-permanent members of the Security Council from Europe, namely the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Greece and Slovenia, and was supported by all Security Council members except the United States. UN Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas, Miroslav Jenca, said at the meeting that Israel's plan will plunge Gaza into a greater humanitarian disaster, including the forced evacuation of 800,000 people and a prolonged siege of Gaza City. He stressed the need for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire and the unconditional release of hostages, as well as ensuring the smooth flow of humanitarian aid and the protection of civilians. "There is no military solution to the armed conflict in Gaza or the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict. There will be no sustainable solution without an end to Israel's unlawful occupation and the achievement of a viable two-state solution. Gaza is, and must remain, an integral part of a Palestinian State," Jenca said. Riyad Mansour, permanent observer of Palestine to the United Nations, called for the Security Council to take action against Israel's plan, saying millions are suffering across the Gaza Strip. "Israel is killing Palestinians in Gaza. That is its objective. And there, over 2 million victims are enduring unbearable agony that the human mind can barely comprehend. We are not allowed to fail them any longer," he said. The overwhelming majority of Security Council members, including representatives from the above-mentioned European countries, Russia, Algeria, and Pakistan, condemned Israel's decision to expand its military operations in Gaza. "Expanding military operations will do nothing to bring an end to this conflict. It will not secure the release of the hostages. It will only deepen the suffering of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. This is not the path to resolution. It is a path to more bloodshed," said James Kariuki, UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations. "The latest Israeli statement should sound the alarm for us. As we said on August 8, France condemns in the strongest terms the Israeli government's plans to expand its military operations to take control of Gaza City and thus to militarily control the entire Gaza Strip," said Jay Dharmadhikari, French deputy permanent representative to the United Nations. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said Friday in a statement that the Security Cabinet has approved a plan to take over the Gaza Strip's biggest city, and that the Israel Defense Forces will prepare for the takeover while distributing humanitarian assistance to civilians outside the combat zones.
