On August 9, at Xixiakou Shendiaoshan Wildlife Park in Weihai, Shandong, a hyena provoked a tiger from across an enclosure barrier. In response, a Siberian tiger climbed over the fence into the hyena’s area and began biting it. During the altercation, another tiger paced along the fence, seemingly trying to “break up the fight.”

Witnesses said the confrontation lasted two to three minutes before keepers intervened with long-handled tools to stop it.

Zoo staff stated that both the tiger and hyena involved were juvenile animals, smaller in size and with almost no real attack capability, and neither was injured.

The zoo said it would improve enclosure design and add anti-climbing measures to prevent similar incidents.
