CCTV shows how 47 Israeli passports fell into trash at hotel in Sarajevo
This is the moment dozens of Israeli tourists' passports were accidentally thrown into a rubbish bin at a luxury hotel in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The incident occurred on August 15 at the five-star Hills Hotel in Sarajevo, where 47 guests discovered their travel documents were missing during check-out.
The papers had been collected as part of the standard procedure for large group bookings. When the travellers requested their identification back, the staff were unable to locate them.
CCTV footage later showed a bag containing the credentials slipping off the reception desk and falling into a rubbish bin unnoticed.
Additional waste was then thrown on top, hiding the items.
Hotel owner Saljo Mrkulic said the records were kept together due to the group booking and denied any intentional disposal.
The Hills Hotel issued a statement confirming the passports fell into the bin accidentally and rejected claims of deliberate discarding.
The Service for Foreigners' Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina said the holidaymakers had to remain in Sarajevo for several extra days while replacement papers were arranged.
The Israeli Embassy in Belgrade provided new documents, enabling the group to leave Sarajevo and return to Tel Aviv on August 19.
Director Zarko Laketa described the situation as an 'unfortunate set of circumstances' and commended the swift response to the incident.
Authorities said they continue to assist foreign nationals in line with domestic law and international standards.
