US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Israel for an official visit to discuss the ongoing war in Gaza, following an Israeli airstrike in Qatar.

Footage shows Rubio and his wife, Jeanette Dousdebes, disembarking their plane at Ben Gurion Airport on Sunday, September 14.

They were welcomed by US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee and his wife, Janet.

It comes just days after Trump ally Charlie Kirk was shot dead by an assassin during an event in Utah.

Rubio was scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and visit the Western Wall in Jerusalem later in the day.

In a statement ahead of the visit, Rubio said: 'On my way to Jerusalem. My focus will be on securing the return of hostages, finding ways to make sure humanitarian aid reaches civilians, and addressing the threat posed by Hamas.

'Hamas cannot continue to exist if peace in the region is the goal.'

His trip comes amid tensions within the Trump administration over Israel's recent airstrike in Doha. The matter is expected to be a key topic in Rubio's discussions with Israeli officials.

Rubio said President Donald Trump was unhappy about the strikes, but stressed that US ties with Israel remain strong. He added that he would speak with Israeli officials about how the incident could impact Trump's goals of bringing hostages home, eliminating Hamas, and ending the war in Gaza.

Following his meetings in Israel, Rubio is expected to join Trump on a scheduled diplomatic visit to the United Kingdom.
