Motorbike rider suffers from crash after GPS misled to airport flyover
A motorcycle rider suffered a horror crash when his GPS directed him onto an airport flyover where motorcycles were banned.
Songkran, 28, drove onto the elevated road while delivering documents from Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok, Thailand, on September 15.
After seeing a sign prohibiting two-wheelers, he pulled over to turn back but was struck by a hurtling sedan that sent him flying toward the guardrails.
Songkran's vehicle was left lodged in the front of the car as it was engulfed in flames.
Footage shows drivers battling the growing blaze with an extinguisher before airport firefighters arrived to douse it.
Emergency crews found a seriously injured Songkran draped on the guardrails, with his leg skewered on a piece of metal from the streetlight.
Rescue teams had to be careful cutting him free as he was perched precariously over another road. He was taken to Chularat 9 Airport Hospital for treatment.
The female sedan driver, 48, told police she had just arrived from abroad and was driving home when the crash occurred.
She said: 'I just returned from overseas and I have had very little sleep. I also have a pre-existing medical condition.
'After landing, I was driving home to Bangkok but I fell asleep at the wheel. I didn't know I blacked out until I hit someone.'
Police said the woman, whose name was not disclosed, was summoned to the Krabang Police Station for further questioning.
A police spokesman said: 'We would like to caution motorcyclists to strictly avoid motorcycle use on the elevated road, as it is not only illegal but also poses a risk of accidents.
'While Suvarnabhumi Airport has consistently deployed officers to enforce the law, violators still secretly use this route.'
On September 2, a family of three had to be rescued after their GPS sent them into a 15ft-deep canal in Trat province.
The father said the navigation application led them to the canal's edge but they managed to escape through the doors just before the vehicle sank.
Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
