Floods submerged a 900-year-old historical site after heavy rain caused a river to overflow in Nakhon Ratchasima, northern Thailand.

Residents were woken up by the raging muddy torrents in the early hours of the morning on November 5.

The Prang Pha Kho historical site, an ancient palace and temple, was seen submerged by the deluge.

More than 30 households were forced to flee their homes and some have moved in with relatives in other areas.

Government officials have been giving continuous assistance to affected residents and if rainfall does not persist, the situation is expected to return to normal this week.

Thailand and other countries are nearing the end of their annual rainy season, which sees regular downpours of rain and flash floods.
