1. MOTION GRAPHIC SHOWING PLANE’S ROUTE AND CRASH SITE
HONG KONG - OCT. 20: Two ground staff were killed early on Monday after a cargo plane skidded off the runway on landing at the Hong Kong International Airport and fell into the sea after colliding with a security patrol vehicle, local media reported.
The Boeing (BA.N) 747 from Dubai veered off the north runway and collided with a stationary patrol vehicle with two ground staff members on board after landing on the tarmac around 4 am (local time), the local English news website Hong Kong Free Press reported.
Both the cargo plane and the vehicle fell into the sea. The two ground staff were confirmed dead after being recovered from the sea some 40 minutes later.
The plane was partially submerged, but all four crew members on board escaped.
Airport officials did not receive a distress signal from the cargo aircraft.
Man Ka-chai, chief accident and safety investigator of the Air Accident Investigation Authority, told reporters that Flight UAE9788 was given the green light to land by one of the airport’s control towers.
The authority will launch a probe into the cause of the accident.
