This is the heartwarming moment villagers rescue a kitten that was floating through floodwaters on a rolled-up rug.

A family was filling sandbags on the riverbank to protect their home from rising water when they spotted the tiny cat riding the ‘magic carpet' in Ang Thong, Thailand.

Footage shows the brown moggy clinging to the orange mat as it drifted along the strong current on November 8.

The locals quickly took a boat and paddled toward the feline, successfully taking it to safety.

The parents, along with their children, comforted their new pet by gently rubbing its fur and taking turns holding it.

Mum Manatsanan Prakaithong said: ‘I sent my son to borrow a boat. We are happy that we saved the cat.'

The kitten was named Boon Rod and was estimated to be around two months old.

The family later took Boon Rod home to live with them.

Floodwaters rose along Thailand's Chao Phraya River last week, affecting low-lying areas in Ang Thong and neighbouring provinces. The flooding was triggered by heavy rains from Typhoon Kalmaegi, which left hundreds dead in Southeast Asia.
