11. VARIOUS OF CHILDREN PLAYING AMONG TENTS DEIR BALAH, GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - NOV. 19, 2025: An education tent has been set up in Deir al-Balah in the Gaza Strip to support children orphaned by Israeli attacks.
Inside the large tent, arranged as a classroom, children sit at desks and receive lessons from volunteer teachers.
English teacher Malak Azzam said the children had missed two years of schooling and initially struggled with Latin letters, but have begun to make progress.
She noted the war’s severe psychological toll, adding that disruptive behavior has become more common compared to pre-war classrooms.
Majd Abu Ubayd, a Palestinian girl living in the camp, said daily life remains difficult, even for basic needs such as water. She expressed hope for an end to the war, the restoration of basic rights, and a return to their homes without fear or sorrow.
For the third consecutive year, over 650,000 children in the Gaza Strip have been deprived of formal education, according to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).
The disruption of schooling is not merely an educational gap, but also a significant barrier to healing from the deep trauma caused by years of conflict.
Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed nearly 68,000 Palestinians in the enclave, most of them women and children, and rendered it largely uninhabitable.
The assaults have partially or completely destroyed 97% of Gaza’s school buildings, according to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
