Four elephants were deployed to clear debris from the devastating floods in Indonesia.

The trained jumbos were sent to areas in Pidie Jaya Regency, Aceh, that were inaccessible to heavy equipment.

Footage shows the pachyderms, named Abu, Mido, Ajis, and Noni, being et to work as they remove logs swept away by the deluge in Meurah Dua district on December 8.

Hadi Sofyan, the Head of the Sigli Regional Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), said the elephants were trained animals brought from the Elephant Training Centre.

He added: 'Our target for clearing is the areas affected by the flash floods in Meureudu and Meurah Dua Districts, Pidie Jaya Regency.

'In addition to helping clear material stuck in people's homes, the elephants would also clear access roads to buried homes.'

He said that the elephants will remain in the area until December 14 to assist in evacuation and aid distribution.

Around 961 people were killed and 289 are still missing as extreme flooding and landslides hit Indonesia's Sumatra island earlier this month.

Despite the soaring death toll, President Prabowo Subianto has not yet declared a national emergency which would allow foreign aid.
