Canadian tourist, 44, arrested over carjacking in Thailand
A Canadian tourist was arrested over alleged carjacking in southern Thailand.
Michael James Parton, 44, from Edmonton, reportedly forced his way into the SUV as driver Natthaphong Suwan, 35, was collecting his niece from school.
Despite the Thai man's protests, the Canadian allegedly refused to leave, prompting him to drive to the police station to lodge a report with the Canadian still lounging in the backseat.
But when Natthaphong left his car to talk to the officers, Michael was said to have hopped into the driver's seat and sped away in Krabi province on December 19.
Police said the holidaymaker went on a road rampage, nearly crashing into other cars along Utarakit Road as he drove erratically in the allegedly stolen Ford Everest.
He was later intercepted by more than 30 officers near Krabi Hospital. They said he 'appeared to be under the influence of drugs'.
Footage shows Michael, seen with an eyebrow wound, crying as he was hauled into the police station to be questioned.
As officers tried to drag him into a room, he slumped on the floor, whimpering: 'I work there. I work there, oh gosh. Fred, the big guy, get him, he's evil, man.'
A police spokesman said: 'The police have initially accepted the complaint from the victim and will proceed with charges of theft. Whether or not there are drugs in his system will be determined after further testing. He is being held for legal proceedings.'
Natthaphong said he was parked near the Ammartpanichnukul School waiting for his niece when Michael suddenly opened the door and entered the SUV.
He added: 'I told him to get out, but he refused and said he wanted to go to the hospital. Something felt wrong, so I decided to drive straight to Krabi City Police Station.
'As soon as I parked and went out to inform officers, he jumped into the driver's seat, shut the door and sped off. I tried to chase him and even jumped back into the car to stop him, but I couldn't and had to jump off as he drove away.'
