A truck flipped over as strong winds battered Turkey.

Footage captured by Hazar Miran shows the lorry lying on its side on a motorway in Istanbul on January 8.

A line of vehicles was seen at a standstill as powerful gusts continued to sweep through the area.

Authorities said wind speeds exceeded 70 kilometres per hour in some districts. Rough seas and widespread disruption to maritime transport were also reported.

The incident followed earlier warnings from the Turkish State Meteorological Service, after gale-force winds moved into Istanbul during the morning, strengthening over the Bosphorus and the Marmara Sea.

Severe weather conditions were also noted across the wider Marmara and Aegean regions.
