This is the terrifying moment locals flee as a tidal river surge hits Indonesia.

Footage shows residents scrambling from murky waters racing inland in Bojonegoro Regency, East Java, on January 7.

At least four men were seen in the video running to safety as debris floated across the land. Another local was seen navigating the water on a small board.

No injuries were reported following the incident.

Authorities had warned earlier of extreme weather affecting East Java from January 1 to 10. Officials said the surge was driven by a combination of an active Asian monsoon, atmospheric wave disturbances, and the Madden–Julian Oscillation currently affecting the region.

A tidal river surge occurs when ocean tides push seawater upriver, mixing with river currents and rapidly raising water levels inland.
