Pickup truck crashes into power lines causing outage in city
This is the dramatic moment a pickup truck crashed into power lines causing a power outage in a city.
Sitthiphong Nakoon, 42, reportedly lost control and rammed his black Mazda into a power pole in Chonburi, eastern Thailand, on Sunday.
Dashcam footage shows the vehicle smashing violently into the post, causing explosions as more poles ahead collapsed.
Terrified motorists were seen reversing from the scene, the power lines falling consecutively like dominoes.
Authorities cut power to the area as rescue teams rushed to save Sitthiphong who was trapped in his pickup with minor injuries. They also rescued four people in a crushed Mitsubishi Triton.
A Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) spokesman said: 'The incident caused a widespread power outage and damaged the electrical system supplying the public. Six 115kV and six 22kV poles were damaged.
'The PEA is currently mobilising teams to repair the electrical system and restore power as quickly as possible. The pole installation is expected to be completed by 7 pm today.'
Police Lieutenant Colonel Jomphot Khongsin of the Bo Win Police Station said: 'We will wait for the injured victims to recover before questioning them to determine the cause and take further legal action.'
Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
