This is the incredible moment a male lion uses its powerful voice to intimidate a group of loitering hyenas looking to steal food in the bush.

In a video filmed on June 3 in Kruger National Park, South Africa, shows the male lion standing over a buffalo carcass that could, according to the filmer, be smelled all throughout the bush.

But along with the lion, a group of 16 hyenas had also sniffed out the meal.

Footage shows the scavengers loitering around the lion and the carcass, attempting to intimidate the big cat by wailing.

But the lion stands its ground and the hyenas eventually lose interest.

It was during a cold early morning safari in the Kruger National Park that we came across a male lion with the remains of a buffalo carcass that he hunted a few days earlier. The smell of the carcass travelled deep into the bush and eventually attracted a large number of hyenas. Lions and hyenas find themselves at the top of the food chain in the African bush with both species being formidable and strong predators. The intense competition for food is extreme and for this reason lions and hyenas have been locked in a great battle of rivalry for as long as these two species have existed. The video shows how one male lion stands his ground against an intimidating group of sixteen threatening hyenas wanting to steal his food. The hyenas became extremely vocal with their continuous whooping, giggling and whining, trying to intimidate the lone male lion. Amazingly enough the male lion does not look intimidated at all. He stands his ground and does not show any fear, even though he is outnumbered. The male lion suddenly responds with his powerful roar, so loud that we could feel the base rumbling in our stomachs. The lion’s roar had everyone in awe and incredibly the hyenas eventually went silent as the king of beasts states his dominance and shows the hyenas who is the real boss of the African bush.
