Two amorous monitor lizards were caught mating under a factory floor, only for workers to smash open their love nest with sledgehammers on Monday (February 25).

The pair of massive reptiles crawled through a gap in the concrete then snuggled up outside the building in Chachoengsao, central Thailand.

Shocked workers heard strange noises and went to look before noticing the entwined reptiles.

Steel factory owner Pisit Sae-Joong, 27, called the rescue service. They immediately spotted the lizards stuck inside the narrow space.

The two monitor lizards – between 7ft and 8ft long - were found cuddling in the cramped gap. They are believed to have crawled in there together to mate. Factory workers spent 15 minutes using sledgehammers to smash the surface of the concrete hole, making sure that the lizards did not panic or get hurt. They then slowly put a lasso on the heads and carried them from the dark one by one.

Factory boss Pisit said: “They called me to see it. We thought it was alone, so we were going to handle it. Then, we hammered the hole and realised that he had a big companion.

“It was really unexpected to find them inside the small hole. We were worried about them, so thought it was better to call the professional officers and let them do the rescue.

‘’They looked like they were cuddling, like they were enjoying some ‘boom boom’ in a private place. The animal catchers said they were mating.

''I’m sorry to have disturbed them but we couldn’t leave them there. How would they have got out again?’’
