A driver managed to get stuck in this precarious position after trying to cross a half-finished motorway bridge.

Chanwut Tharirutrakhom, 60, decided to try the new highway while he was on the way home in Nakhon Ratchasima, northeastern Thailand.

The driver, who was not familiar with the road, did not slow down and tried to power over the bridge, which he did not know is currently closed while workers lay concrete slabs.

He was part way across when he realised that his car could not go further because it was stuck between the steel bars and trapped into the hole.

The pick-up truck was in a precarious position above a 16ft drop when construction workers rushed to save the man from the damaged car.

They called the ambulance when they saw Chanwut’s left arm was bleeding from several scratches.

Chanwut, who is now recovering at the Sikiew hospital, said that he did not know that the bridge has not finished building - and blamed a lack of road warning signs.

He said: “I didn’t see any sign saying that the bridge is closed, so I drove up there. It seemed finished to me until I saw many rusty steel bars on the road.

“I tried my best to avoid the bars but my car finally stuck between them and almost fell off the bridge.”

Police from Sikiew district contacted the construction company and said they should be responsible for Chanwut’s medical fees. They said that they believed the driver’s statement to be true.

A police spokesman said: “We have ordered workers to put a construction sign and concrete barriers before the highway entrance to stop a repeat.'
