At least 14 people died and 50 others injured when heavy rains and thunderstorm caused a large tent to collapse in north-west India.

The incident took place on June 23 in Jasol area of Rajasthan state's Barmer district.

Reports said a large number of devotees had assembled to take part in a religious event when the fatal accident occurred.

Visuals showed a man singing a verse from the popular Ram Katha when he notices strong winds blowing away the tent.

The man, at first, calmly announces that he is stopping the programme for a while as the winds were heavy.

Seeing the tent shaken by the wind, he quickly urges the gathering to vacate the place.

Moments later, the man leaves the podium as cameras cut to a black frame. It is understood the tent came down crashing.

Another footage showed cranes and ambulances rushing to the crash site as a group of people watch on.

The cranes were seen removing the fallen tent and helping in the rescue mission.

The injured people were rushed to a hospital.

Taking to Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed it an unfortunate incident and said his prayers and thoughts are with the bereaved families.

Condoling the incident, Rajsthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has announced an ex gratia of Rs 500,000 (USD 7185.50) each to next of the kin of the deceased.

An investigation has been initiated by the concerned state department, the chief minister said.
