This is the terrifying moment dozens of new mothers fled a maternity ward at a hospital in the Philippines during a fire.

The women had just given birth when smoke was noticed from a nearby building.

They had to carry their newborn babies down a fire escapte at the public hospital in Manila, the Philippines, on July 7.

The fire set off the alarm in their ward, forcing patients at the Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital, a maternal and newborn tertiary hospital, to evacuate around 100 mothers and their children.

Inspector Hector Agadulin from the Manila Fire Department said: "A busted air con unit inside the home of the Ricarte family in Barangay 310 triggered the blaze requiring 14 fire trucks."

A resident from the nearby village sustained second-degree burns after a burning sack fell on him during evacuation.
