Grieving African Buffaloes? Buffaloes sniffing the remains of a calf killed by Lions
African or Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) are formidable animals, and adults are quite capable of killing Lions, their principal predators. This large herd returned to examine the remains of a buffalo calf that had been killed and eaten by a pride of nine Lions. The satiated Lions had fed on the calf, and quickly left the kill as the large herd of Buffaloes returned, crossing the road in front of our vehicle as vultures circled above. The Buffaloes seemed disturbed by the remains of the calf, and many Buffalo bulls and cows sniffed the carcass, before moving away. The Buffalo herd stayed near the calf’s remains for about 15 minutes before moving away through the stunted Mopane scrub. This drama occurred on the H1-7 road, 6.5 km north of Babalala Picnic Spot, in Kruger National Park, South Africa.
