A buffalo herd charged head first at a pride of 11 lions to rescue a stranded calf from being eaten.

Fransunette Swanepoel was on a drive through Kruger National Park, South Africa, on June 26 when she spotted a herd of 500 buffalo stampeding below.

Incredible footage shows a chasing group of lions try to bring down an adult buffalo who only just escaped by dragging its leg away.

The herd then turned their attention to a calf that had been hunted and bravely attacked the lions, eventually chasing them away allowing the baby to stand up and run away.

Fransunette said: “This was simply the most incredible sighting. We couldn’t believe what we were watching.

“We have visited Kruger at least once every year since 1981 and we have had many amazing sightings but this one takes number one.

“The 11 lions divided the buffalo into two big groups. Six of the younger lions caught a buffalo calf, while the older lions tried to catch a bigger buffalo.

“The older lionesses failed in their first attempt and one of them almost got knocked down by one of the buffalo.

“After six minutes a big buffalo returned to the lions which had the calf. The lions ran away and left the calf.

“To our surprise the calf survived. We were there for about an hour where the lions and buffalo chased each other until the lions walked away and lost interest.”
