Residents of Mitchells Plain, Cape Town clashed with police over food parcels on Tuesday (April 14).

Footage shows police firing rubber bullets and setting up barricades built out of burning tyres.

A resident from the community said: "The community has been promised food parcels, ever since the lockdown, there hasn't been one food parcel."

South Africa is under a national lockdown until the end of April.

The community of Tafelsig in Mitchells Plain started protesting after a local organisation couldn't provide enough food parcels for the community. The community wants government to provide them with food parcels during the national lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

A resident from the community said she wants President Cyril Ramaphosa to come to the aid of her community and provide food parcels during the lockdown. The community pelted police with stones and burnt heaps of tyres to block roads. Police retaliated with stun grenades and rubber bullets and continued to monitor the situation.

South Africa is under a national lockdown until the end of April.
